Backing up Outlook Express accounts - Internet account settings

Backing up your email account settings can save problems if ever anything happened to your pc, also it enables a smooth transfer to a newer or different version of outlook express or outlook.

Your email account settings include pop and smtp server settings as well as usernames and passwords (if enabled).

This tutorial will guide you through the process of backing up these important settings.

The first step is to open up Outlook Express.

Click on tools and then select accounts from the pull down menu.

You will see the Internet accounts dialogue box appear, it will look similar to our example in fig 1.1 below:

you will see your internet account on the left hand side, in our example we are going to back up the pop.example.com account.

Select (single left click) your internet account and then click the Export button as seen in fig 1.1.

Now you will see the Export Internet Account dialogue box similar to that in Fig 1.2 below.

Navigate to where you want to save the settings, enter a name in the filename box (or leave it as it is) and then click the Save button.

Repeat this process to backup as many accounts as required, when you have finished backing up simply click the close button.

Outlook express exports internet account files with the file extension (suffix) .iaf.

First of all open up the Outlook Express program into which you want to import your account settings.

Next, click on tools and then select accounts from the pull down menu.

The Internet accounts dialogue box will appear, yours may differ from our example in Fig 1.3 below as you may have different accounts installed.

Click on the Import button and you will be presented with the Import Internet Account dialogue box as seen below in Fig 1.4.

Navigate to the folder where you have saved your exported files and select (left click on) the account you wish to import (in this example pop.example.com.iaf), then simply click the Open button.

Once it has been imported you should see it in the Internet accounts dialogue box.

When you have finished importing accounts simply click the Close button and your accounts should be ready to use.

Make Your Windows XP Run Faster Than Never Before

These are some tricks that make use of programs listed in this guide and nothing will happen even if you go.

DISABLE INDEXING SERVICES
Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. Click Next

OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

1.Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

DISABLE PERFORMANCE COUNTERS

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.

To disable:

1. download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List(http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/remove404.mspx)
2.Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom.button below.

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1. Open My Computer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer

IMPROVE MEMORY USAGE

Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.

Once Installed:

1.Go to Show Wizard and select All
2.Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing.
3.Exit and Save Cacheman
4.Restart Windows

OPTIMISE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.

1. Download(http://www.speedguide.net/files/tcpoptimizer.exe) and install
2. Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
3. Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
4. Check Optimal Settings then Apply
5. Reboot

OPTIMISE YOUR PAGEFILE

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.

1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties
2. Select the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance choose the Settings button
4. Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
5. Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.

Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

RUN BOOTVIS – IMPROVE BOOT TIMES download from(http://www.majorgeeks.com)
BootVis will significantly improve boot times

1. Download and Run
2. Select Trace
3. Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
4. A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
5. Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system’s boot process. When it’s done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
6. Reboot.
7. When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete

REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. Click Ok

REMOVE FONTS FOR SPEED

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Fonts folder
3. Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

DISABLE UNNECESSARY SERVICES

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines:

Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Fast User Switching
Help and Support – (If you use Windows Help and Support leave this enabled)
Human Interface Access Devices
Indexing Service
IPSEC Services
Messenger
Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
Portable Media Serial Number
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Remote Registry Service
Secondary Logon
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service – (Unplug n’ Pray will disable this)
Telnet
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Upload Manager
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (Do not disable if you use a wireless network)
Workstation
To disable these services:

Go to Start and then Run and type “services.msc”
Doubleclick on the service you want to change
Change the startup type to ‘Disable”

TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE

System Restore can be a useful if your computer is having problems, however storing all the restore points can literally take up Gigabytes of space on your hard drive. To turn off System Restore:

Open Control Panel
Click on Performance and Maintenance
Click on System
Click on the System Restore tab
Tick ‘Turn off System Restore on All Drives’
Click ‘Ok’

DEFRAGMENT YOUR PAGEFILE

Keeping your pagefile defragmented can provide a major performance boost. One of the best ways of doing this is to creat a separate partition on your hard drive just for your page file, so that it doesn’t get impacted by normal disk usage. Another way of keeping your pagefile defragmented is to run PageDefrag. This cool little app can be used to defrag your pagefile, and can also be set to defrag the pagefile everytime your PC starts. To install:

Download(http://www.sysinternals.com) and Run PageDefrag
Tick “Defrag at next Reboot”,
Click “Ok”
Reboot

SPEEDUP FOLDER ACCESS – DISABLE LAST ACCESS UPDATE

If you have a lot of folders and subdirectories on your computer, when you access a directory XP wastes a lot of time updating the time stamp showing the last access time for that directory and for ALL sub directories. To stop XP doing this you need to edit the registry. If you are uncomfortable doing this then please do not attempt.

Go to Start and then Run and type “regedit”
Click through the file system until you get to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Cur rentControlSet\Control\FileSys tem”
Right-click in a blank area of the window on the right and select ‘DWORD Value’
Create a new DWORD Value called ‘NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate’
Then Right click on the new value and select ‘Modify’
Change the Value Data to ‘1′
Click ‘OK’

DISABLE SYSTEM SOUNDS

Surprisingly, the beeps that your computer makes for various system sounds can slow it down, particularly at startup and shut-down. To fix this turn off the system sounds:

Open Control Panel
Click Sounds and Audio Devices
Check Place volume icon in taskbar
Click Sounds Tab
Choose “No Sounds” for the Sound Scheme
Click “No”
Click “Apply”
Click “OK”

IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on.

Go to Start Menu and Click Run
Type in “Regedit” then click ok
Find “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\M icrosoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction”
Select “Enable” from the list on the right
Right on it and select “Modify”
Change the value to “Y to enable”
Reboot

IMPROVE SWAPFILE PERFORMANCE

If you have more than 256MB of RAM this tweak will considerably improve your performance. It basically makes sure that your PC uses every last drop of memory (faster than swap file) before it starts using the swap file.

Go to Start then Run
Type “msconfig.exe” then ok
Click on the System.ini tab
Expand the 386enh tab by clicking on the plus sign
Click on new then in the blank box type”ConservativeSwapfileUsage =1″
Click OK
Restart PC

MAKE YOUR MENUS LOAD FASTER

This is one of my favourite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will ‘feel’. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu.

Go to Start then Run
Type ‘Regedit’ then click ‘Ok’
Find “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\”
Select “MenuShowDelay”
Right click and select “Modify’
Reduce the number to around “100″
This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to “0″ but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them – well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood

MAKE PROGRAMS LOAD FASTER

This little tweak tends to work for most programs. If your program doesn’t load properly just undo the change. For any program:

Right-click on the icon/shortcut you use to launch the program
Select properties
In the ‘target’ box, add ‘ /prefetch:1′ at the end of the line.
Click “Ok”
Voila – your programs will now load faster.

IMPROVE XP SHUTDOWN SPEED

This tweak reduces the time XP waits before automatically closing any running programs when you give it the command to shutdown.

Go to Start then select Run
Type ‘Regedit’ and click ok
Find ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\’
Select ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’
Right click and select ‘Modify’
Change the value to ‘1000′
Click ‘OK’
Now select ‘HungAppTimeout’
Right click and select ‘Modify’
Change the value to ‘1000′
Click ‘OK’
Now find ‘HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop’
Select ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’
Right click and select ‘Modify’
Change the value to ‘1000′
Click ‘OK’
Now find ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Cur rentControlSet\Control\’
Select ‘WaitToKillServiceTimeout’
Right click and select ‘Modify’
Change the value to ‘1000′
Click ‘OK’

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES I

This tweak works by creating a batch file to clear the temp and history folders everytime you shutdown so that your PC doesn’t waste time checking these folders the next time it boots. It’s quite simple to implement:

1. Open Notepad and create a new file with the following entries:

RD /S /q “C:\Documents and Settings\”UserName without quotes”\Local Settings\History”
RD /S /q “C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\History”
RD /S /q “D:\Temp\” <â€“”Deletes temp folder, type in the location of your temp folder”

2. Save the new as anything you like but it has to be a ‘.bat’ file e.g. fastboot.bat or deltemp.bat

3. Click ‘Start’ then ‘Run’

4. Type in ‘gpedit.msc’ and hit ‘ok’

5. Click on ‘Computer Configuration’ then ‘Windows Settings’

6. Double-click on ‘Scripts’ and then on ‘Shutdown’

7. Click ‘Add’ and find the batch file that you created and then press ‘Ok’

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES II

When your PC starts it usually looks for any bootable media in any floppy or cd-rom drives you have installed before it gets around to loading the Operating System from the HDD. This can waste valuable time. To fix this we need to make some changes to the Bios.

1. To enter the bios you usually press ‘F2′ or ‘delete’ when your PC starts

2. Navigate to the ‘Boot’ menu

3. Select ‘Boot Sequence’

4. Then either move your Hard drive to the top position or set it as the ‘First Device’

5. Press the ‘Escape’ key to leave the bios. Don’t forget to save your settings before exiting

Note: Once this change has been made, you won’t be able to boot from a floppy disc or a CD-rom. If for some strange reason you need to do this in the future, just go back into your bios, repeat the steps above and put your floppy or CD-rom back as the ‘First Device’

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES III

When your computer boots up it usually has to check with the network to see what IP addresses are free and then it grabs one of these. By configuring a manually assigned IP address your boot time will improve. To do this do the following:

1. Click on ‘Start’ and then ”Connect To/Show All Connections’

2. Right-click your network adapter card and click ‘Properties’.

3. On the ‘General’ tab, select ‘TCP/IP’ in the list of services and click ‘Properties’

4.I n the TCP/IP properties, click ‘Use the following address’ and enter an IP address for your PC. If you are using a router this is usually 192.168.0.xx or 192.168.1.xx. If you are not sure what address you could check with your ISP or go to ‘Start/run’ and type ‘cmd’ and then ‘ipconfig/all’. This will show your current IP settings which you will need to copy.

5. Enter the correct details for ‘Subnet mask’, ‘Default gateway’ and ‘DNS Server’. Again if you are not sure what figures to enter use ‘ipconfig/all’ as in stage 4.

FREE UP MEMORY

I found this useful app via FixMyXP. ClearMem Is an Excellent Tool for speeding up your XP Computer (especially if your system has been on for awhile and you have a lot of applications open). What it does, is it Forces pages out of physical memory and reduces the size of running processes if working sets to a minimum. When you run this tool, the system pauses because of excessive high-priority activity associated with trimming the working sets. To run this tool, your paging file must be at least as large as physical memory. To Check your Paging File:

1. Go to your control panel, then click on ‘System’, then go to the ‘Advanced’ Tab, and Under ‘Performance’ click ‘Settings’ then the ‘Advanced’ Tab

2. On the Bottom you should see ‘Virtual Memory’ and a value. This is the value that must be at least as large as how much memory is in your system.

3. If the Virtual Memory Value is smaller than your system memory, click Change and change the Min Virtual Memory to a number that is greater than your total system memory, then click ‘Set’ and Reboot.

4. Once you have rebooted install ClearMem

ENSURE XP IS USING DMA MODE

XP enables DMA for Hard-Drives and CD-Roms by default on most ATA or ATAPI (IDE) devices. However, sometimes computers switch to PIO mode which is slower for data transfer – a typical reason is because of a virus. To ensure that your machine is using DMA:

1. Open ‘Device Manager’

2. Double-click ‘IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers’

3. Right-click ‘Primary Channel’ and select ‘Properties’ and then ‘Advanced Settings’

4. In the ‘Current Transfer Mode’ drop-down box, select ‘DMA if Available’ if the current setting is ‘PIO Only’

ADD CORRECT NETWORK CARD SETTINGS

Some machines suffer from jerky graphics or high CPU usage even when a machine is idle. A possible solution for this, which, can also can help network performance is to:

1. RightClick ‘My Computer’

2. Select ‘Manage’

3. Click on ‘Device Manager’

4. DoubleClick your network adaptor under ‘Network Adapters’

5. In the new window, select the ‘Advanced’ tab

6. Select ‘Connection Type’ and select the correct type for your card and then Reboot

REMOVE ANNOYING DELETE CONFIRMATION MESSAGES

Although not strictly a performance tweak I love this fix as it makes my machine ‘feel’ faster. I hate the annoying ‘are you sure?’ messages that XP displays, especially if I have to use a laptop touchpad to close them. To remove these messages:

1. Right-click on the ‘Recycle Bin’ on the desktop and then click ‘Properties’

2. Clear the ‘Display Delete Confirmation Dialog’ check box and click ‘Ok’

If you do accidently delete a file don’t worry as all is not lost. Just go to your Recycle Bin and ‘Restore’ the file.

DISABLE PREFETCH ON LOW MEMORY SYSTEMS

Prefetch is designed to speed up program launching by preloading programs into memory – not a good idea is memory is in short supply, as it can make programs hang. To disable prefetch:

1. Click ‘Start’ then ‘Run’

2. Type in ‘Regedit’ then click ‘Ok’

3. Navigate to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Cur rentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\ ‘

4. Right-click on “EnablePrefetcher” and set the value to ‘0′

5. Reboot.

Ophcrack is a Windows password cracker based on rainbow tables. It is a very efficient implementation of rainbow tables done by the inventors of the method. It comes with a GTK+ Graphical User Interface and runs on Windows, Mac OS X (Intel CPU) as well as on Linux.

Get physical access to the machine. Remember that it must have a CD or DVD drive.
Download DreamPackPL http://www.d–b.webpark.pl/dreampackpl_en.htm
Unzip the downloaded dreampackpl_iso.zip and you’ll get dreampackpl.ISO.
Use any burning program that can burn ISO images.
After you have the disk, boot from the CD or DVD drive. You will see Windows 2000 Setup and it will load some files.
Press “R” to install DreamPackPL.
Press “C” to install DreamPackPL by using the recovery console.
Select the Windows installation that is currently on the computer (Normally is “1? if you only have one Windows installed)
Backup your original sfcfiles.dll by typing: “ren C:\Windows\System32\sfcfiles.dll sfcfiles.lld” (without quotes)
Copy the hacked file from CD to system32 folder. Type: “copy D:\i386\pinball.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\sfcfiles.dll” (without quotes and assuming your CD drive is D:)
Type “exit”, take out disk and reboot.
In the password field, type “dreamon” (without quotes) and DreamPack menu will appear.
Click the top graphic on the DreamPack menu and you will get a menu popup.
Go to commands and enable the options and enable the god command.
Type “god” in the password field to get in Windows.

You can also go to Passwords and select “Logon with wrong password and hash”. This option allows you to login with ANY password.

Note: If you are running any kind of Anti-Virus Tool it will give you a prompt saying that it is a Virus since they have already labelled this tool as a Hack-Tool. A Hack-Tool is NOT a virus. The DreamPackPL helps you bypass the Windows Login screen and it is not destructive.

1. From the Desktop, click Start then Run.

2. In the Open box, type regedit then OK.

Gmail Has a Daily Limit on Sending Email

Gmail imposes a limit on the attachment size (20 MB) and the overall storage space (6 GB and growing) but there’s also a daily quote on sending email. Break the rules and Google will disable you Gmail account temporarily without any warnings.

So while sending an email message to a large group of friends using Gmail, read the following rules to avoid temporary shut-down of Gmail:

Rule 1. If you access Gmail via POP or IMAP clients (like Microsoft Outlook), you can send an email message to a maximum of 100 people at a time. Cross the limit and your account will be disabled for a day with the error "550 5.4.5 Daily sending quota exceeded."

Rule 2. If you access Gmail from the browser, you may not address an email message to more than 500 people at a time. Try adding any more recipients in the To, CC or BCC field and your Gmail account will get probably disabled for 24-72 hours. Error: "Gmail Lockdown in Secton 4"

Rule 3. Always double check email addresses of recipients before hitting the Send button in Gmail. That’s because your account will get disabled if the email message contains a large number of non-existent or broken addresses (<25>

Rule 4: This is slightly unrelated but still important – Google will disable your Gmail account permanently if you don’t check your Gmail email for a period of nine months. All the stored messages will be deleted and you Gmail address (user name) may be released for others to grab it.

You cannot actually post a raw PDF file directly into your blog. The other thing to consider if you're able to convert a very large pdf file to html or txt is the page size limit. Fortunately there's a lot of ways to get around with it. Here's my story..

A few days ago, I was struggling to post a large PDF file into my blog. This file has 774 pages!! Yes you read it right, but I did it with a dash of patience and and a pinch of persistence. It's a complete list of successful examines who passed the 2007 Nursing Board Exam (Philippines). I tried to convert the file to both text (txt) and HTML files using Adobe Acrobat Pro and upload it in this site, but the file size exceeds the limit. Well, just imagine how many pages, but my idea was to put it inside a box and you can scroll it to view the file. Anyways, that simply didn’t work.

So with my googling power, I stumbled upon the following solutions. I tried each one of these to find out which can do the job.

SaveFile is a free File Hosting Website where you have to register for an acoount... upload the file up to 60mb... they will provide you a link to embed in your site. To view that file, click the link which leads you back to their website, and while there, you have to find another link to access the file. Duh… Not Recommended, more cons than pros.

Gmail account. If you already have this, just login to your account, compose an email, attach the file to that email, send it to youself, open the attached file as HTML, then copy and paste it to your website. Easy huh. But it only converts, from PDF to HTML, 3 pages of my file. My verdict: Very handy and recommended for small files.

Scribd is another File Hosting Website that works for large files. With this, you can upload any file type, upload multiple files at the same time, and convert to flash files which can then be embedded in your site. While viewing, you can pan, scroll, adjust the view size, search a word or name within the file, print, download the file as PDF, MS Word, Plain text or MP3, print, email it... Wow!! For me it is more convenient than downloading the file locally and viewing it using Adobe Reader or even Foxit.

How to transfer contacts from a Nokia to a Blackberry cellphone

Here’s the situation: just got a Blackberry 9000 and needs to transfer contacts from old Nokia N93.

Here’s the solution:

Using Nokia PC Suite, I synched Nokia mobile phone to either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express (Windows Address Book). I’m really not a big fan of Microsoft Outlook so I never installed it on any of our computers / laptops. Outlook Express, however, is, I think, always installed in XP or Vista operating systems. So, in my case, I synched to Outlook Express. I’m not really sure but I think Outlook Express uses the Windows Address Book.
Using the Blackberry Desktop Manager, I synched from Windows Address Book to Blackberry Device. You have to select where to sync from using the Synchronization configuration window.
That’s it.

There are several solutions available in the Net and there’s this solution about exporting your contacts to CSV, import it your e-mail client or Gmail, export it to CSV, use ABC Amber Converter to convert the CSV file to an IPD file (this is the file where Blackberry holds its contacts) and restore the IPD file to your Blackberry device.

While this solution works, it’s not entirely accurate. The mobile phone number ends up being saved in the Notes field of your contact card. If someone calls or sends you SMS, you won’t know who called or sent.

The Windows Address Book sync approach, on the other hand, (more?) accurately saves the mobile number to the appropriate Blackberry contact field. In fact, in the Blackberry Desktop Manager, you can select which Windows Address Book fields map to which Blackberry contact fields.

Egg, Honey And Olive Oil Mask

These three things are easily available at home. Mix all of them and store it in a bottle. Apply them on your hair for 30 minutes and cover your head with shower cap. Wash it with some light or herbal shampoo after 30 minutes. This mask will make your hair strong and it will give the outstanding shine to your hair.

Coconut Cream Mask

Massage your head and hair with coconut cream or if its not available then use coconut oil. Wrap your hair with hot towel and wash it after one hour.

Steps

Step One

Always try to buy your green tea face wash from a reliable source. Trusted brand names are usually a safer bet. Try Wet and Wild’s or Aubrey Organics' Green Tea Face Wash, Kiss My Face’s Organic Face Wash with Green Tea.

Step Two

If you have very sensitive skin, it is always best to perform a patch test on your skin when trying new products. Wet a small patch of skin on your forehead (if you wear bangs) or just in front of your ear. These areas will likely be less noticeable should you develop an allergic reaction to the products. Place a small amount of the green tea face wash on that area and gentle rub into the skin. Rinse thoroughly and allow 24 hours to pass to determine if an allergic reaction will occur.

Step Three

To begin using the green tea face wash, wet your face with lukewarm water. Hot water is drying to the skin but warm water will open up pores for better cleansing.

Step Four

If you use a face cloth to wash your face, dampen the face cloth and apply a small amount of the green tea face wash to the cloth. Use your hands to spread the cleanser in a large area on the cloth to better distribute it onto your face.

Step Five

If you use your hands to wash your face apply a small amount in the palm of one hand and rub your hands together to evenly distribute the cleanser onto the palms of both hands.

Step Six

Using either the face cloth or your hands, gently cleanse your skin, working in a circular motion. Start at the bottom of your face and work up to avoid dragging the skin down (gravity will do that well enough in time!).

Step Seven

Be sure to thoroughly, yet gently wash every inch of your face. Pay special attention to your hairline where makeup and hairspray can stick and cause clogged pores.

Step Eight

When cleansing around the delicate eye area, use a light patting motion instead of dragging your cloth or hands across the skin.

Step Nine

When cleansing is finished, rinse the cloth or your hands thoroughly to remove all soap residues. Now, starting at the bottom again, begin to rinse the cleanser from your skin. If using a cloth, simply gently wipe the face until all traces of the cleanser are gone. If using your hands splash water on the face until all the green tea face wash is removed.

Step Ten

Finish off your green tea face wash by turning the water to a slightly cool temperature and giving your face a final rinse. The cooler water will close and tighten your pores.

Step Eleven

Dry your face by patting it with a clean face towel and apply a moisturizer specific to your skin type.

23 Jul 2009 A pioneering University of Wolverhampton lecturer has won a £25,000 grant to research the healing effect of sugar on cuts and wounds.

Senior Lecturer Moses Murandu grew up in Zimbabwe and his father used granulated sugar to heal wounds and reduce pain when he was a child. But when he moved to the UK, he realised that sugar was not used for this purpose here.

Moses, 43, carried out research into the effect of sugar on patients' wounds on the vascular ward at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham, funding the study himself for six months.

He has now been awarded the prestigious Fondation Le Lous Scientific Research Innovation Award and £25,000 to enable him to continue his innovative work.

Sugar can be used on wounds such as bed sores, leg ulcers and even amputations. It works because bacteria needs water to grow, so applying sugar to a wound draws the water away and starves the bacteria of water. This prevents the bacteria from multiplying and they die. Moses found that a 25% sugar concentration ensures the microorganisms cannot survive.

Mr Murandu, Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing at the School of Health and Well Being, said: "Using granulated sugar in wounds has never been done in the UK before, although sugar paste has been used. When I was a child, my father used sugar or salt and I grew up without realising that something that works is not widely used.

"While salt is painful, sugar is not and reduces the pain drastically. The patients we have tested it on in the pilot study have said that they never knew such a simple method could make such a difference to their quality of life.

"I was happy for the patients who suffer from terrible and debilitating wounds with little hope of getting better, as this treatment can ease their pain."

Jacqui Fletcher, Herve Le Lous Board Member, said: "Moses was awarded the prize not just because the quality of his proposal was excellent, but also because he challenged current thinking. In the UK we have a habit of saying 'Ah yes we know in countries that can't afford proper dressings they use other things, but when you are here you have the freedom and luxury of choosing a whole range of alternatives', but Moses didn't think that way. He takes the view that he used sugar very effectively, therefore why wouldn't it work equally well here? He should be commended for his tenacity in taking this project forward when many others would not even have started."

Moses, from Edgbaston in Birmingham, was supported in his studies by Mr Malcolm Simms, consultant vascular surgeon at Selly Oak Hospital, who had worked in Uganda and witnessed the use of sugar there.

Mr Murandu submitted an abstract to the Fondation Le Lous detailing his study and the benefits for patients. As well as £25,000 over two years to further his research, Moses received a trophy and will also receive support from board member Carol Dealey, who is a Research Fellow at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and University of Birmingham.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Moses Murandu studied midwifery in South Africa and also studied in Atlanta, Georgia, before coming to the UK to study a Masters at Birmingham University, supported by Professor Colette Clifford. As well as lecturing at the University of Wolverhampton, he is currently studying for a doctorate at Birmingham.

According to India Times, there are groups of freelancers in India making over a millions dollars by providing development and IT services to their counterparts in the US.

The freelancers results were intriguing enough for us to dig a bit deeper and put together a nice fact sheet for opporutnities in freelancing.

Two freelancers featured in the piece were :

Synapse Communications, the number two provider on eLance. The provider grossed $2M USD in revenue and it was started by 26 year old with rented PCs and Rs 6 Lakhs( roughly $15,000 USD) of startup money.
Xicom Solutions, the number one provider on eLance grossed $600,000 USD. It charges a minimum of $20/hr for development work and was also started by a young indian who was tired of his job.

These figures are proving that freelancing is a valid and fruitful business model. It makes sense, why not leverage your talent as a technology expert to help other businesses achieve their goals and get paid well for it. Services like eLance have made it easier for providers(freelancers) to connect with people who want work done. We did a bit of digging around at the top 50 providers on eLance and found some interesting stats.

Each one of the top 50 providers has earnings of $65,000 USD or more.

Freelancing tips to make your first million:

Do quality work (if you want more work and referrals sent to you)
Charge by the hour not by the project. Unless you know that you can finish up the project under budget leaving you a margin.
Keep a margin, but don't get too greedy. Competition is always around the corner.
Deliver on time or ahead of time.
Support the product, but make sure to charge for the additional support work.
Be available to communicate. IM / Email / Phone when necessary.
Use a project management system and billing system to keep track of things.
Make sure your clients leave feeling happy with the results. Their success is your success.

First, the RSS Feed Button Maker has been updated with additional support for Textpattern, MovableType and Blogger.

Also, we’ve launched a new Social Bookmark Links Tool. This is a fantastic new tool that allows you to easily create links embedded with your blog post urls for over 30 social bookmark and tagging sites.

Why would you do that? Social bookmark sites like del.ico.us, digg, furl and others offer the opportunity for visitors to bookmark blog posts to a shared bookmark web site. Each bookmark by users is a vote for a page. Those “votes” can drive traffic to your blog post and can also help rankings since each bookmark is a link.

Eric Ward tells me he is a fan of the Social Bookmark Links Tool and he’s implemented it on at least one of his blogs already. The RSS Feed Button Maker is being used by the likes of Mike Grehan, Jim Boykin and Kim Krause, so it must be a pretty good tool.

Alternatives to the M.B.A.

Today's workers need to plan on being fired. You can do a great job every day, but your division or your product line or your location may simply be eliminated by organizational realities far beyond your control. So career marketability is more important than ever. Your current employer may know what you can do, but can you prove to prospective employers that you have what it takes to make contributions? That's the acid test, and that's why educational credentials are more important than ever.

To be sure you are ready in case you need to jump ship--or just to grasp that next rung on the ladder--you will almost certainly need education beyond a bachelor's degree. Many careerists facing this reality reflexively reach for the M.B.A., the Swiss Army knife of master's degrees. But is that the best degree choice for you? The M.B.A. requires heavy quantitative skills you may lack, prerequisite courses in economics and accounting you may have skipped, and so on. Besides, the M.B.A., even with its second-year concentrations, is a generalized degree that may not give you the specialized training that you need. Perhaps it's time to consider some of these alternatives to the M.B.A.

Master's in Advertising or Marketing--Instead of choosing an M.B.A. with a concentration in advertising or marketing, pursue a degree that focuses entirely on these interests. Advertising and marketing programs have rigorous curricula involving, for example, psychographics, demographics, and appropriate analytics and business metrics, but without the survey of general business topics you would find in an M.B.A. program.

Master of Human Resources--If you have a career in human resources, and intend to stay in HR, this is the obvious choice for you. It is far more beneficial to focus on the law, policy, best practices, and theory of your chosen field than to spend time on such arcane subjects as general corporate finance.

Master's in Organization Development--Organization development (OD) is a relatively new field, focusing on the human side of organizational systems. In short, OD is a human-focused, systems-based approach to addressing organizational problems. If you want to learn how to build teams, resolve conflict, design information flows, deal with organizational culture, create large-scale organizational change, or develop post-merger integration strategies, then OD might be right for you.

Master of Public Administration--If you work in the public sector, for a government contractor, for a major nongovernmental organization (NGO) or nonprofit, or in any type of highly bureaucratic organizational structure, this degree may be a good choice for you. M.B.A. programs focus on the needs of major corporate organizations, and outside the corporate world, the types of information flows, information technology (IT), finance, and regulatory environments are different.

Master of Public Policy--Although popular in the same sectors as public administration, the public-policy curriculum is more theoretical and more analytical than the focus of the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) People with M.P.A.s do things--people with M.P.P.s think about how things should be done. The M.P.P. degree is popular in public-sector consulting, think tanks, policy-setting and regulatory environments, and with such glamour employers as the United Nations.

Master of Public Health--If you work in health care, or in a government agency concerned with health-care delivery, then the MPH can be an excellent choice. The MPH is a wide-ranging degree, with curricula that may range from epidemiology to immigrant/nonnative communications and marketing, to public finance.

Master of Health-Care Administration--This is a more specialized degree choice than the MPH, appropriate for people who plan career advancement within a hospital, insurer, health maintenance organization (HMO), hospice, gerontology center, adult daycare, extended-care facility, or similar. One variant is the Master of Hospital Administration, which is obviously for people who plan to advance within a hospital setting.

Master of Sports Administration--This degree is self-explanatory, but with a caveat: It is sometimes more popular with aspirants than with practitioners. You need sports experience, either as part of the degree program or before you even enter, in order to get the maximum career benefit. If you plan to run a college athletic program, work in professional or Olympic sports, or even run a youth sports league, this degree may fit.

Master of Educational Administration--This degree can focus on primary/secondary education, or on higher education, but usually not both, so be sure you choose a program with the concentration that interests you most. There are many variants, such as the M.Ed. with a concentration in administration, or the M.A. in student affairs.

Master of Arts Administration--If you want to work in the business side of museums, theater, public art, or music, then this degree may be perfect for you. As with sports administration, if you want this degree to help you in your career, you need to have internships or experience in arts administration at some point before you graduate.

Master's in Urban Planning--City and regional-planning degrees are not just for planning officers. Architecture firms, construction companies, commercial and residential developers, and such specialized firms as shopping-center design consultants will employ and advance people with this degree.

Master's in International Relations--The MIR will help anyone in business, government, nonprofit, or NGO environments with transnational or international business to conduct. Candidates should speak more than one language proficiently before entering this type of program. Career success with an MIR hinges on the student having lived overseas prior to entering the degree program. As with some of these other choices, an MIR without the right experiences may have little career impact. And just for the record, the U.S. diplomatic corps use the Foreign Service Written Exam (FSWE) as an entrance requirement, not a master's degree.

There are dozens more examples of alternatives to the M.B.A., such as the MSIA (master of science in industrial administration) or the MEM (master of engineering management). Any master's degree will have career value as you gain valuable transferable skills, but some of these degrees make more sense than the M.B.A. for people with specific career plans. If anyone can succeed, and all it takes is ACTION, why doesn’t everyone take action to

achieve their goals everyday?

Power Method #1) Pain and Pleasure

If you learn nothing else this year but this concept, your whole life will change. The

person who has popularized this concept and changed thousands of lives with it most is

The human mind is consciously and subconsciously motivated by two basic forces.

1. The need to AVOID PAIN

2. The need to GAIN PLEASURE.

If you think about it, every single action you take in your life is driven by the need to

avoid pain, and the need to gain pleasure. The need to avoid pain is always STRONGER

than the need to gain pleasure.

For example: If you have $10,000 and you have two options

Choice a) Go for a 4 day trip to Hawaii.

Choice b) Pay $10,000 to remove a tumor from your brain.

Allow me to give you a powerful example of how to instantly apply this into your life to

start creating results TODAY. Here’s a personal example of how I used this concept to

create the Powerful Sleep system.

I had been planning to finally write an eBook about my research in sleep for about a

month, but I kept on putting it off, why? Frustrated with a lot of things in my life, I

decided to give this Pain & Pleasure concept a Try. I drew a PAIN and PLEASURE

graph like the one below of my current situation, and then drew one of the outcomes I

wanted.

Current Situation:

PAIN PLEASURE

1. Writing the book would take too much time… I don’t have time

2. It would be super stressful, I would have to stay up at night and do even more

research on how to create and write this so it’s perfect.

3. What if I write it and no one will read or buy it? It will be a waste of time

Pleasure

1. When the book is finished I could help a lot of people with the information and

improve other’s lives.

2. When the book is finished, I’ll have extra money coming in.

As you can see, my need to AVOID PAIN was pushing me in the direction not taking any

action. It’s also known as “procrastination”. The only difference between people who

procrastinate and people who succeed with taking action, is the associations of PAIN and

PLEASURE they have with doing something. I look at my pain and pleasure sheet, and

thought of how I could focus my associations to push me into taking action instantly.

Here was my new sheet.

As you can see, I created immense pain around NOT DOING the tasks, I clearly wrote

out and visualized how this would look and feel. The pain of NOT WRITING the book

was now greater than the one of writing it. My values of contributing to the world and

creating something special were now at stake. To further hammer the nail in, I clearly

described the immense pleasure visually, emotionally, and kinesthetically of how it will

feel when the task is done. With all the arrows in my mind pulling me away from pain

and into pleasure, I was on my way that very same minute.

You’re reading this article now as a result of that PAIN & PLEASURE sheet I wrote

down! This concept is so powerful, I urge you to do it as soon as you’re done reading

this article.

Take at least one action you’ve been putting off in your life, whether it is a goal to lose

weight, to create more money, or improve a relationship. Take that action, create a pain

and pleasure sheet like the one above and see how rapidly motivated you will be to

achieve that goal.

Here’s another example of someone trying to lose weight.

Power Method #2) Chunking

The second reason why people don’t take action on what they want to achieve TOO BIG

inside of their head. Often a simple goal like going to the gym to work out becomes a

number of PAINFUL things.

1. I have to go get the keys to my car.

2. I have to put my work out clothes on, and iron them because they’re all wrinkly.

3. I gotta go to my car and drive there through traffic.

4. Once I get there they’ll make me sign up for a membership.

5. Once I am signed up they’ll give me a 2 hour tour of the place and try to upsell

me even more membership options which I don’t want!

6. Then I gotta work out for an hour, and I’ll get all sweaty.

7. I have to drive home with all that sweat on me.

8. Once I’m home I’ll have to shower, and by then I’ll have no time to do anything

else!

“Forget it! I’m watching TV! Going to the gym is too complicated and too painful”

Chunking, and the Rule of 3s

Our conscious mind can usually hold only a number of things to do at once. Whenever

there is more things to do than the conscious mind can handle, we feel overwhelmed and

stop everything completely. What I realized after a while is that nothing is really as big

as we make it out to be. We just have a habit to make things bigger than they are.

The above gym example could be brought down to three simple steps:

1. Go to the gym

2. Work out

3. Feel great and energized!

Whenever you find yourself feeling blocked or procrastinating, think of the way you are

chunking down the goal into steps? Are you thinking of ALL the things you have to do,

and how PAINFUL they will be? If you are, chunk them down into 3 steps. As you

focus on these steps, you’ll find you’ll feel much more balanced and relaxed about the

goal!

Power Method #3) State Management

“I’m not in the mood today, I’ll do it tomorrow.”

“I really don’t FEEL like doing that right now.”

Have you ever heard someone say these things? Perhaps you say them to yourself on a

regular basis? The bottom line is that if you wait around to feel in the right mood or

emotional state to do something, it’s most likely never going to happen.

99% of people in the world have no control over how the feel. They either wake up

happy, or they don’t. They have a “bad day” or a “good day.” To these kinds of people it

seems that the way we feel is some kind of mystical enigmatic force that we have no

control over.

Part of success is being able take ACTION despite FEAR, PAIN, and UNCOMFORT.

Taking action even when you’re not in the friggen moooooooooooooooooood.(*whiny

voice*)

Instead of waiting for an emotional state to come to you, use state management methods

to create the emotional state you need to achieve your goals.

Super-Charging Your Emotional State

Your emotions are dependant on 2 primary factors:

1) What you focus on

2) What you do with your body

1. Changing Your Focus

Example: Jill’s goal is to lose 50 lbs, after a week of working out 3 times per week and

changing her eating habits, she steps on the scale and notices that she only lost 1 lb.

Feeling like she isn’t moving towards her goal fast enough, she instantly begins to feel

disappointed and discouraged about continuing her quest to lose weight.

“Don’t let the present moment determine your outcome!”

One of the biggest secrets of success I’ve learned over time is that the current moment

has nothing to do with your outcome! Often we get caught up with a depressing situation,

we focus on it to the point where the emotions get strong enough to stop us.

At this point, instead of focusing on what seems like a failure to Jill, she could change her

focus to the actual OUTCOME she wants. Which is feeling great, sexy and attractive.

Feeling free and healthy.

As you change your focus in critical times that would usually stop you emotionally, you

create incredible power to move despite discomfort!.

2. Using Your Body to Create Energy!

In the Powerful Sleep system I write about using this method at specific times of your

day to optimize your inner sleep system to lessen your sleep and create an abundance of

Changing your focus is just “positive thinking”, until you add this method into your state

management arsenal.

The fastest and easiest way to create an emotional state shift in your mind, and to give

your body the energy it needs to propel you to your goals, is to make a drastic change in

what you’re doing with your body.

You’ve got to move fast, you’ve got to get your heart rate going, and you’ve got to make

it impactful!

Example:

Often times when I’m faced with several writing deadlines for books, articles and

interviews, I spend a lot of time sitting at my desk thinking. Getting work done on the

computer is great, but there’s only one challenge: My body isn’t doing anything!

It gets to the point where my emotional drive begins to drop. At this point, instead of

stopping my work an taking “a break” like most people do, I run into the back-yard, and

jump for 10 minutes on my trampoline while thinking of all the things I want for my life

and the lives of the people I affect with my work! By the time I get back in front of my

laptop, I am supercharged with energy, ideas, creativity, and emotional drive!

What ways can you think of to create more energy and a better emotional state at key

points during your day?

Because your emotional state is so critically important to achieving your goals, and the

overall quality of your life, I urge to start using this technique in your life. Changing what

you’re doing with your body doesn’t have to be as drastic as jumping on a trampoline

whenever you’re in a down state. It could be as simple as getting up and clapping your

hands for a minute while visualizing your goal. It can be going outside for a breath of air

or a short jog, a stretch, or even just putting on a smile

When you combine all three of these methods: Leveraging your pain and pleasure

associations, chunking down your processes, and managing your emotional state, you’ll

find that you become unstoppable in your journey to success.

What is a successful date? Does it mean it leads on to relationship and romance? Well you that would be cool. But it doesn't have to mean that. If you insist on dating everyone, 50% of the people you meet won't be compatible straight away. In which case you will have half of all your dates as a complete waste of time. Stop doing that and start analyzing what kind of people you get on with. Okay I could say the following@

I like people who are aged 29 to 36, single and never previously married, no children but would like a child sometime. Should be Christian to an extent, well educated, reasonably tall and have long blonde hair. They should be receptive to the idea of marriage like winter sports and live within 100 miles of my home.

Okay if I do this then I can be accused of many things here but this is just an example. The effect though is to set some criteria by which I can date and from which I am likely to see some successful dating. If I don't make a dating profile then its open to all comers. That's okay. Maybe you simply don't care and want to meet anyone you can., In which case spread your net widely. The problem is though that you are not going to please everyone and once again 50% of your dates will be a complete waste of time.

Recognize that none of us are compatible with everyone. Reclines your minimum dating requirements and then ensure you match the requirements you set. There is absolutely no point in setting the following if you don't match yourself.

I am looking to meet a guy who is 6 feet 2" or taller, must be athletic and a professional sportsman with an income of over $200k a year. They must be extremely attractive, own their own house and sports car and be able to surf.

If you are five feet 1", out of shape and maybe overweight with no career and a low income and cannot swim then what you have done is just describe your ideal fantasy figure not your probable dating criteria. I am not for one second saying you won't be attractive to the character you have described but to date successfully you must establish ground where you are most likely to be compatible and will easily match.

The next thing to consider when looking at successful dating are your expectations. If you are expecting instant love at first sight followed by a perfect romance and children then that's great. The issue here is that it may not happen that way. I wish it would but it doesn't. So being realistic and expecting little is often the best way to date. If you do then one of these days you are in for a nice surprise. Greet every date with optimism but don't go over the top. If you make a new friend then you have done well. Don't expect Cupid at every turn. It will happen but maybe not just yet.

Successful dates are simple dates. They are casual and fun. Believe me when I say that desperation comes across as though you have a placard over your head announcing it. Never ever be desperate to date. If you are then this is the time to take a breather ironically. How many times has someone said that you meet a person when you least expect it. Its true, that's why. So successful dating is when its part of your monthly routine but not the be all and end all.

Successful dates are when you are at your most casual and most upbeat and most relaxed. Successful dates happen when you are focused but in a good mood. Put the rest of your house on order and your dates will naturally take on a new glow because you will be far more positive and organized.

Beijing: China's Health Ministry has ordered a hospital to stop using electric shock therapy to cure youths of Internet addiction, saying there was no scientific evidence it worked.

Linyi Mental Health Hospital in eastern Shandong province used the treatment as part of a four-month program that has so far treated nearly 3,000 youths, the China Youth Daily newspaper has reported, citing the psychiatrist who runs it, Yang Yongxin.

The ministry said in a statement posted on its Web site late Monday there is no domestic or international clinical evidence that electric shock therapy helps cure Internet addiction. Electric shock therapy is most often used to treat severe depression.

Chinese psychologists say symptoms of Internet addiction include being online more than six hours a day - playing games and looking at pornography rather than working or studying - and getting angry when unable to get online.

The hospital could not be reached for comment Tuesday, but spokesman Yang Shuyun told the Beijing News newspaper had stopped administering the shock therapy after seeing the ministry's comments.

Shuyun said it was only part of the overall program to treat patients, which also included medicine and psychological counseling. Patients are charged 5,500 yuan ($805) a month.

Computer and Internet use has risen dramatically as China's economy has boomed in recent years, and according to an estimate by China's National People's Congress about 10 percent of the country's under-18 users are addicted to the Internet, although it is not recognized as a clinical condition.

'Splogs' are polluting search engine results in the chase for advertising revenue, but little can be done to stop the new scam

Is splog the new spam? That's the question being asked by an increasingly irate weblogging community as it grapples with the dodgy sites that are starting to ruin search engine results. And top of the list causing the splog explosion is Google, the search engine giant.

A splog is a spam or fake blog created to achieve a high search engine result. The splogger makes money from advertising placed in the splog - often using Google's AdSense service - or by directing visitors to e-commerce sites. Topics range from cruises and health to porn and gambling. On a cheap-looking splog about gambling, to take one example, AdSense advertisements may link to well-known betting firms. The placing of these advertisements is beyond the firms' control, and end up wasting their impact.

The splog issue has grown quickly and nobody knows how many there are. Tracking service Technorati, which follows 20m blogs, says up to 8% of the 70,000 blogs created every day are fake. Feedster blocks thousands a day while Splogspot.com publishes a weekly list. The latest shows 41,000, of which 34,000 are on Google's free Blogspot hosting service.

Splogfighter, an anonymous American, was so incensed that he started a one-man war. He is prompting Google to delete thousands of splogs a day from Blogspot.

"The splog situation has deteriorated quite considerably lately," he says. He has personally downed 25,000 splogs since late August. "One spammer created about 13,000 spam blogs, which set off sharp criticism of Google's inaction."

That inaction has created a money-making opportunity for sploggers tricking search engines by overusing key words and links. Such chicanery boosts the search ranking of featured pages, and draws in visitors who click on pay-per-click advertisements. Splogs can be built quickly by simple automatic scripts or programs.

Such stunts have caused a sharp reaction from bloggers and retaliation from search engine IceRocket.com, which temporarily stopped indexing Blogspot sites.

Fighting the frustration

"In my opinion, Google's Blogspot is by far the worst offender," says Blake Rhodes, chief executive of IceRocket. "The blog software people need to make the signup process a lot more difficult and users should have to verify each post by email. We are indexing Blogspot again and will keep a close eye on things."

Rhodes' suggestion is aimed at perhaps the biggest issue - ensuring reliable search engine results. Bloggers say splogs have no value, and frustrated users find splog- infested search results contain little of value. The problem is that, unlike email filtering, they can do nothing to stop it.

Jason Goldman, product manager for Blogger, says it is taking action such as visual word verification and various filters. A "flag as objectionable" feature allows users to report splogs to the company's anti-spam and anti-fraud teams.

"These tools are just the initial steps as we work with other blog services for a larger solution," says Goldman, who believes only a minority of the millions of blogs on Blogspot contain spam. Google deleted 13,000 splogs and published the list that caused the original outcry.

But isn't there a conflict of interest? Splogs earn Google revenue from AdSense adverts, and provide exposure for advertising customers unwittingly included on splogs - including Bupa, Halifax Bank, and Co-Op Travel. However, such companies may dislike their image being cheapened by splogs and the unscrupulous getting a cut of their advertising fees.

"Spam blogs cost Google money both on the hosting and infrastructure side for Blogger as well on the AdSense side with spam prevention," says Goldman. "We take our obligation to our AdSense advertisers seriously and spam, left unchecked, would dilute the confidence our advertisers place in us. By being aggressive on combating spam, we want to make sure that doesn't happen."

Yet this is a battle Google will not win. There are always people who see the internet as a money-making tool. Just as spammers rapidly adapt to anti-spam measures, the sploggers are learning fast, too. It's a highly technical war and the situation is likely to get worse before it gets better.
