Backing up Outlook Express accounts - Internet account settings


Backing up your email account settings can save problems if ever anything happened to your pc, also it enables a smooth transfer to a newer or different version of outlook express or outlook.

Your email account settings include pop and smtp server settings as well as usernames and passwords (if enabled).

This tutorial will guide you through the process of backing up these important settings.

The first step is to open up Outlook Express.

Click on tools and then select accounts from the pull down menu.

You will see the Internet accounts dialogue box appear, it will look similar to our example in fig 1.1 below:

you will see your internet account on the left hand side, in our example we are going to back up the pop.example.com account.

Select (single left click) your internet account and then click the Export button as seen in fig 1.1.




Now you will see the Export Internet Account dialogue box similar to that in Fig 1.2 below.

Navigate to where you want to save the settings, enter a name in the filename box (or leave it as it is) and then click the Save button.

Repeat this process to backup as many accounts as required, when you have finished backing up simply click the close button.

Outlook express exports internet account files with the file extension (suffix) .iaf.

First of all open up the Outlook Express program into which you want to import your account settings.

Next, click on tools and then select accounts from the pull down menu.

The Internet accounts dialogue box will appear, yours may differ from our example in Fig 1.3 below as you may have different accounts installed.

Click on the Import button and you will be presented with the Import Internet Account dialogue box as seen below in Fig 1.4.

Navigate to the folder where you have saved your exported files and select (left click on) the account you wish to import (in this example pop.example.com.iaf), then simply click the Open button.

Once it has been imported you should see it in the Internet accounts dialogue box.

When you have finished importing accounts simply click the Close button and your accounts should be ready to use.

Backup and Restore the Outlook Express Mail Rules

Backup the Outlook Express Mail Rules

1. From the Desktop, click Start then Run.

2. In the Open box, type regedit then OK.

3. Locate and click the following registry subkeys (each key will need to be saved to a different file):

HKEY CURRENT USER\Identities\(Identity Number)\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\Rules\Mail

(note:once again there will be a different "(Identity Number)" for each identity on your system. To identify a specific identity you can click on each HKEY CURRENT USER\Identities\(Identity Number) and you will see a "Username" value on your right with the name associated with that (Identity Number))

4. Go to the Registry menu and select Export Registry File.

5. From the Save In box, change the location to your desktop.

6. At the File Name box, type "Mail Rules[date].reg" then

7. Go to the Registry menu and chose exit.

Restore an Outlook Express Backup

1. Open Outlook Express on the computer you wish to restore the backup to.

2. From the file menu go to Identities > Add New Identity.

3. Set up your Identity and account information.

4. Close Outlook Express.

5. From the Desktop, click Start then Run.

6. In the Open box, type regedit then OK.

7. Go to HKEY CURRENT USER\Identities\ and locate the identity number related to the Identy you wish to restore the rules to.

8. Close regedit

9. Right click on the "Mail Rules[date].reg" or "Blocked Senders[date].reg" from the Outlook Express Backup you wish to restore and select edit.

10. Replace the (Identity Number) listed in the registry file with the one you just located in the registry.

11. Save and Close Notepad

12. Right Click on the "Mail Rules[date].reg" or "Blocked Senders[date].reg" from the Outlook Express Backup you wish to restore and select merge.

13. Repeat these steps for each Identity.
